Mitchell Scholar Awarded Inaugural Beckett Scholarship

Mitchell Scholar Nicholas Johnson has been awarded the first-ever Beckett Fellowship by the Irish Arts Ministry and Trinity College Dublin. Nick was selected from a large group of candidates, most of whom were Irish. This is the inaugural year of the Beckett Fellowship, timed to coincide with the Beckett Centenary. The award bestows €10,000 a year on the recipient. Nick is in the final year of his PhD at Trinity College Dublin’s Samuel Beckett Centre. According to John O’Donoghue, the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, it was Nick’s dissertation that helped to earn him this prestigious scholarship. “...On going on: the Ethic of Impossibility in the Performance of Samuel Beckett’s Prose, clearly meets the ethos and objectives of the scholarship,” Minister O’Donoghue said.
