Caitriona Balfe - from the Wilds of Scotland to a Wilde Award
January 6, 2017. Caitriona Balfe will receive an Oscar Wilde Award on 23 February at the annual US-Ireland Alliance event that recognizes the Irish in entertainment. Glen Hansard will also be honored and perform. Irish duo Glenn&Ronan will open for Hansard. J.J. Abrams emcees the event that is held at his Bad Robot in Santa Monica.
Balfe, a two-time Golden Globe nominee and BAFTA award winner, has established herself as a star with a massive fanbase following from her critically acclaimed lead role as 'Claire' in STARZ's drama series "Outlander." The series is based off the best-selling books of the same name by Diana Gabaldon and created by Ron Moore. The Irish actress is the centerpiece of the series opposite Sam Heughan. “Outlander” has been deemed a game-changer for STARZ, introducing Caitriona as a strong female heroine into a genre commonly dominated by male antiheroes. The second season returned in the U.S. last April, and was the highest rated series season premiere for the network thus far. “Outlander” will return for a third and a fourth season beginning this year.
Trina Vargo, founder of the US-Ireland Alliance said, “It’s been a great year for Irish actresses and we’re delighted to honor one who is receiving well-deserved recognition for her success in “Outlander.” Given Caitriona’s intense schedule of time travel, and the cold and rainy Scottish weather, our event should be relaxing for her. The one thing that “Outlander” and the Oscar Wilde Awards have in common is whiskey.”
Balfe was most recently part of the high-profile ensemble of MONEY MONSTER, Sony's thriller that debuted at the Cannes Film Festival and was directed by Jodie Foster. Balfe co-starred alongside George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Dominic West, and Jack O'Connell.
Balfe has also been seen in ESCAPE PLAN for Summit/Lionsgate, opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. Previous credits include the Warner Bros. feature NOW YOU SEE ME directed by Louis Leterrier, J.J. Abrams’ Paramount feature SUPER 8, as well as Bryan Singer and Jason Taylor’s limited digital series H+.
Lexus, Zetta Jet, Resurgent Film Group and STARZ are among the sponsors of the casual Oscars Week party.
